If you’ve had an interlock device installed in your car, then avoiding an interlock device false positive may be a big concern for you. Even if you haven’t had the device installed yet, you may still have questions. Many of our clients ask about how to avoid an incorrect reading. In fact, it’s often one of the first questions that they ask. The good news is that false positives are rare. Still, we understand your need to avoid them. That’s why we’ve put together this list of ways to avoid false positives with your interlock device.

Use a Non-Alcoholic Mouthwash

It’s true. Some mouthwashes can cause an interlock device false positive. Why? Some mouthwashes contain large amounts of alcohol. That’s why you should avoid alcoholic mouthwashes while you have the interlock device installed in your car. The device can’t tell the difference between the kind of alcohol that you drink and the kind that you use to freshen your breath before work. You can avoid the problem by sticking to a non-alcoholic mouthwash instead, at least until you get the device removed.

Avoid Food and Beverages Before Driving

We always advise our clients to time meals carefully so that they can avoid an interlock device false positive. Your best option is to avoid eating 30 minutes before you plan to drive. All types of food can produce alcohol in different ways. It’s not enough alcohol to impair your driving, but sometime’s it’s enough to register on your interlock device. The yeast in starchy foods, for instance, can produce a tiny amount of alcohol as it digests. Fruit can ferment. Some sweeter foods contain sugar alcohols. Like we mentioned earlier, the interlock device can’t tell the difference between types of alcohol. If you stop your meal or snack 30 minutes before you drive, however, you should avoid a false positive.
