Getting a new interlock device? One of the first things you’ll learn is how to get a good reading from it. It can take a few tries and bit of practice to get the hang of it. Once you do get the hang of it, though, you’ll have no trouble using it on the road. Since it helps to get some information ahead of time, here’s what you need to know to get a good interlock device reading.

Take Your Time During the Installation

At Interlock Device of New Jersey, we keep a demonstration model to help new interlock device users. While our technicians install your device in your vehicle, a guide will show you how the model works. During this time, feel free to ask any questions, and take your time getting the hang of the device. There’s no rush. We’ll wait until you’re sure you know how to provide a reading. The more confident you become during the demonstration, the better you’ll handle your interlock device outside of the shop.

Create a Good Seal

Now, let’s talk about some specifics. To get a good interlock device reading, you’ll have to create a good seal. Put your lips around the device as if you were about to take a drink of water or blow into a clarinet. The idea is to create enough of a seal that no air escapes. You’ll want all of your air sample to go directly into the device.

Actively Blow into the Device

A lot of people are surprised when they learn this part. When you look up basic information about your interlock device, you’ll find a lot of sources that’ll tell you to “breathe into it.” Well, that instruction isn’t quite accurate. It gives the impression that you’ll breathe normally while using the device, and that’s not quite how it works. In fact, you’ll need to actively blow into the device for several seconds before you get a successful reading.

Avoid False Positives

Now, make sure that you avoid interlock device false positives. We’ll go over the basics with you in person, but you should avoid food and beverages for roughly 30 minutes before you plan to drive. You may also want to switch to a non-alcoholic mouthwash.
