If you installed an interlock device after a DUI, it’s easy to feel shame and embarrassment over the situation. However, you can break that shame by being open about your interlock device. You can make the conversation easier by planning for it ahead of time. We’ve put together a list of some of the things that our clients can do to remove the awkwardness when talking about their interlock devices.

The Broader Conversation

If your interlock device came after a DUI, you might have already been through things such as AA, rehabilitation, and therapy. You may or may not have already talked to friends and family about these things. When you do discuss alcohol-related treatment, you can bring up the interlock device as just a small part of the larger conversation. This way, talking about the device will happen naturally instead of awkwardly. Mention the device if somebody asks you how your treatment is going, for instance, or if someone asks how you’re doing after the court case.

Choose Your Preferred Communication

What if you need to tell certain people about your interlock device but can’t find a way to bring it up easily? In this case, you’ll have to try a bit harder to make the conversation happen. However, this doesn’t always mean sitting the entire family down to tell them. It doesn’t have to be a big, dramatic speech. Instead, choose the method of communication that works best for you. Break up the conversations into smaller chats if you’d prefer that method. Do you communicate best with certain friends via text message? Then go ahead and have that conversation via text message. Do you have the best conversations with your family in the kitchen? Then wait for a moment when you’re in the kitchen.

Start With the Easier Conversations

Some friends and family members are more compassionate and understanding than others. Why not talk to those people first? Take a minute to think about your friends and family members. Who do you think will react best to hearing about your interlock device? Start by talking to that person, and then work your way down the list. You’ll get better and better at the conversation the more you have it.
