Wondering about interlock device penalties? When you’ve been court-ordered to install an interlock device in your car, you end up with a lot of questions. Specifically, many clients want to know about the penalties that come with improper interlock device usage. One of the most common questions among interlock device users is what would happen if they hadn’t gotten the device installed at all. Let’s take a closer look at that question.

Loss of License

For many drivers, the interlock device serves as a safe and legal way to get their driver’s licenses back. Having an interlock device in your car certainly isn’t the most convenient thing in the world. However, driving with an interlock device is far better than losing one’s driving privileges altogether. Relying on friends and public transportation to get to work and run errands can make day to day life especially hard.

That’s the reality for drivers who fail to install an interlock device. When a driver doesn’t get an interlock device installed after a court order, he or she could lose driving privileges. This loss would last for a full year.

What if I Drive Someone Else’s Car?

When a court orders you to have an interlock device installed, you must only drive the vehicle that contains the device until you can have it removed. Otherwise, once again, you could lose your license for a year and face other interlock device penalties.

Furthermore, if you drive somebody else’s car when your own car has an interlock device, the person who owns the other car could also get into legal trouble. If another person lets you drive their car knowing that you have an interlock device installed in your own, they could spend up to 6 months in jail and face a fine up to $1000.

Interlock Device Penalties

Aside from driving without the interlock device, you can get interlock device penalties for other illegal uses, too. For example, some penalties apply to drivers who blow into the device on behalf of someone else.
